Eisenhower Presidential Museum
May 31, 2013 - June 2, 2013
Abilene, KS
We are putting together a first rate fly-In for May 31-June 2nd in Abilene Kansas, birthplace of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. As some of you may know, 5 Star General Eisenhower became the First Supreme Commander of the NATO Forces after WW2. The Eisenhower Presidental Museum is jam packed with WW2 memorabilia; the Birthplace and Burial Chapel are really something to see.
The Eisenhower Center has assured me that the new WWII Exhibit will be ready for all to enjoy! That is along with the rest of the Centers grounds and Buildings.
The Ladies will enjoy a tour of the Seelye Mansion while the dentists of the group will be eagerly listening to an informative CE at the Eisenhower Library.
Once the ladies have enjoyed the life of a 1900’s luxury they will join the studying dentists at the Library and we will tour the Compound, Homestead and Chapel.
For lunch we will head to old Abilene town (lunch on your own). If you are still in the mood for more, the Grey Hound Hall of Fame is across the street. Admission is free but a donation is encouraged. Another side trip may be to the Russell Stover Chocolate Factory. It is wonderful what opportunities abound in Central Kansas. Now I just found out that on that weekend in Junction City, KS, just down the road a piece, is the National Biplane Fly-in; it is a replacement event for the famous Bartlesville, OK event. That is an extra that may or may not get on our agenda and will be an additional cost if we decide to participate.
K78 has 24 hr. low lead fuel pumps and NO Hangar Space. Thus, you will need to bring your TIE DOWNS as spots are scarce and ropes are nonexistent. Remember the Kansas winds are some of the strongest so we will need to tie the planes securely.
Our home away from home will be the Holiday Inn Express in Abilene, KS. Please call them and tell them you are with the Flying Dentists. (785) 263-4049. Standard room rates are $97 plus tax, suites $119 plus tax. Room rates are good until April 30.
There is a indoor pool and fitness center but if you are that ambitious, run a mile with the Kansas wind and then turn around and run back against it and you will have burned plenty of calories Kansas Style.
Our CE will be an accounting of Oral Surgery in a depressed economy by your own Bart Bycroft.
On the aviation front, FAA Master Pilot Jim Tullis will discuss his 17,000 and counting, flight hours. The "FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award" recognizes pilots who demonstrate professionalism, skill and aviation expertise by maintaining safe operations for 50 or more years.
Plan on a great weekend and fun CE as well.
Contact Bart Bycroft for more information. 785-825-2244
National Convention
June 27, 2013 - July 2, 2013
Steamboat Springs, CO
Attention all FDA members and families! It's time to start making plans for the 2013 FDA National Convention! This year's meeting will be held in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The dates are Thursday, June 27th to Monday, July 1st, with a Post Convention at the same location for Tuesday, July 2nd. Our meeting hotel will be the Sheraton Steamboat Springs, located right at the base of the year-round gondolas. You need to make reservations early! Call 1-800-848-8877 and mention the Flying Dentists to receive the special rates. Basic rooms start at $139/night.
Will you be joining us for our FDA tennis or golf tournament? Well, if that is not your cup of tea, I’m sure I’ll see you at the Fun Shoot. With whatever outdoor activity you have in mind, Steamboat Springs area has it all.
The ski area becomes a playground for bikers and hikers, with paths for all levels winding throughout Mt. Werner. There are many golf courses, tennis courts and rivers for rafting. Saturday night we will be dining at the Saddle Back Ranch, with not only a cowboy cookout but a show to boot.
We have been fortunate enough to book Dr. John Wright, the oral pathologist that spoke at the Colorado Springs annual meeting four years ago. He was a big hit at that meeting because of his ability to bring a historically somnolent topic to life and make it exciting. He also joined us in our weekend activities and fit in very well. By all rights, he should be a pilot!
We are planning several different activities to appease a multitude of vacation desires. Some of the planned events are a chuck wagon dinner, the grand opening breakfast, ladies luncheon and, hopefully, a BBQ lunch for the pilots at the airport. Speaking of airports, the official meeting airport will be KSBS, Steamboat Springs.
This year we are going all out to help the ladies of our organization. In Steamboat Springs there will be a time scheduled for the ladies to gather in the lobby to plan daily activities. You will have the opportunity to pool up in small groups to go shopping, hiking, fishing, sun worshiping, sightseeing, etc. This will allow you to meet some of our seasoned members and make new friends. For all you seasoned ladies, please keep the newer or more shy members in mind when making your plans and take them under your wing, showing them how much fun the FDA can be!
The Colorado area is getting some snow this year and it looks like we will be able to have our post convention meeting right there at the resort. We are planning a river rafting trip, water levels permitting, for Tuesday, July 2, 2013. Pray for a heavy snowfall this year to keep the streams full and fires away. I know the FDA members going on the ski trip have been doing just that for the past several months.
Do not let the mountain flying keep you away. We have safe VFR routes to fly. For those of you coming in commercially, you will be flying in to Yampa Valley Airport (KHDN) in Haden, CO. KHDN will also be our instrument alternate.

Canada Fishing
August 1, 2013 - August 5, 2013
Manitoba, Canada
August 1-5 are the dates for our return to Eagle Nest Lodge on the Winnipeg River in Manitoba. We will fly in on Thursday and out on Monday with three days of fishing. All the fresh walleye you can eat for shore lunch each day prepared by our guides, trophy sized Northern Pike lurk in every bay waiting for you to coax them out, and some of the most beautiful sights, smells, and scenery that North America has to offer await you on the majestic Winnipeg River. Eagles are, of course present, and black bear and moose are annual sightings by our fishermen.
26 FDA fishermen are signed up and the camp holds 32. A few more and we will fill the entire camp with the FDAers.
Sequester hasn’t hurt this trip’s border crossing. We use Piney Pinecreek Border (48Y) a quaint, rural airport that straddles the US Canada border next to a highway.
Plan to arrive eary afternoon on Thursday the 1st as we still have a 90 mile flight to CYAX, a land/sea plane base, and then transfer to Eagle Nest Lodge via Beaver on floats.
Remember we will not repeat this trip next year as we are all going to Oshkosh. This is the perfect laid back fishing trip to take a son, daughter, or spouse. Currently we have 6 FDA wives coming and the gals have won the big fish contest 2 of the last 3 years….did I say there was some light gambling?
Registration is $75 per person. This will guarantee you plenty of drinks, munchies, apre’s fish, and a tacky trip favor.
Please send your registration form to Stacy at the central office or register online.
Join us now if you can!
• Call Jessica at Eagle Nest and send her your deposit.
• Send Stacy your Registration fee or register online.
• Let me know you are coming so we are not surprised by your arrival, (Jeff Huber)!

FDA Board Meeting
October 10, 2013 - October 13, 2013
Fredericksburg, TX
Hold the dates! Cancel anything on the calendar that conflicts! This will be one fly-in that you will NOT want to miss.
This home run location will be our third visit to Fredericksburg, . We promise new and different activities, so even if you've been before, it will be a blast! To a Texan, the Hill Country is the location to visit, and for us lucky few, to live. It is a cross between the Arizona desert and the Ozark's, creating the perfect blend of weather and beauty.
Our home base will be the world famous Hanger Hotel right on the airport, (T82). This lodging experience is in a re-created WW2 hanger, with all the decor and settings of the time, but done first class. (Note: the Hanger Hotel does not allow teens under 18 years old).
Being on a runway, we will take advantage of this opportunity with flying opportunities and planned "activities" that will make this a day a pilot will always remember. For those that are ready to give flying a break, we will have many other activities such as winery tours (this is the Napa Valley of Texas), golfing at the famous Lady Bird Johnson gold course, very unique shopping, and countless other possibilities.
A new attraction that was not present at the last Fredericksburg fly-in is the Nation Museum of the Pacific War.
Now I am a WW2 history buff and you can quote me, “This is the BEST WW2 museum that exists). Guaranteed!!!
It is our luck that the Battle of Tarawa re-enactment will take place during our visit. As a group, we are targeting the Saturday, 3:30 show, although you may choose a different time if you wish. Be aware that our board meeting will be Saturday morning. Please reserve your tickets via this link soon as this event always sells out. (Battle of Tarawa Re-enactment).
Be prepared to be taken back in time as this event is very realistic and lasts a full 90 minutes.
A detailed agenda will follow in future newsletters but there will be a social event for the Thursday arrivals, and another one on Friday evening.
Saturday evening we will have dinner at a fantastic venue with a very special guest speaker! From Apollo to the Space Station, Tom Moser, Director of Engineering for NASA, has a wealth of experience. This is one speaker you will not want to miss.
Reserve your room now by contacting the Hanger Hotel at 830-997-9990 and ask for the Flying Dentists group rate.
